JERUSALEM Jun 7, 2005 — Israeli soldiers killed a top Islamic Jihad militant in a West Bank gunbattle Tuesday, and a Palestinian mortar attack on a Jewish settlement in Gaza killed two non-Israeli workers in one of the deadliest days since both sides declared a truce in February.
The violence left five people dead. Other attacks included Palestinian rocket and mortar barrages aimed at a series of Israeli targets and Israel's killing of an unarmed man who entered Gaza from Egypt.
The clashes exacerbated tensions already inflamed by a confrontation Monday at a disputed Jerusalem holy site. The Islamic Jihad and Hamas militant groups blamed Israel for the violence, but said they had no intention of pulling out of the truce.
